Brief Description:  Painting Flaps.

The painting process has become a little bit of a rinse and repeat, but I still offer a short prayer to the voodoo gods before I fire up the clear.....

I have learned to clean, clean, and clean again. One of the biggest problems I have had is trash in the paint. I was cleaning everything 2 to 3X, and then blowing it off with an air gun. I have learned I get better results by skipping the blow gun, but using a tack cloth in it's place. I still get some trash, but not nearly as much.

The primer is not real critical since it gets sanded. I spray the best I can, and it is pretty forgiving, but if I happen to get a little too much in an area, or a bug gets into the wet primer, I don't sweat it and just sand it out. The biggest issue with primer is being careful to not accidently sand a hole into the fabric.

The colors lay down nice and to date have been very forgiving.

The clear is the big stress riser. I have a speed that I move the gun that seems to work well, and I check the distance at the start of almost every section with a spread hand - pinky tip to thumb tip. The flat surfaces are pretty forgiving, but I really have to watch that I don't get too close on the leading and trailing edges or I get shallow runs.

I have found that waiting until the next day to spray clear at mid Sunday morning works much better than trying to get parts completed at midnight on Saturday. The bug situation is much improved, and a good nights rest makes the whole process go much smoother. Before I leave on Saturday night I vacuum up the booth floor and use a scotch brite pad to remove the top layer of over spray from the booth lights. The next morning I search the entire booth with fly swatter in hand to eliminate any bugs I can find, then clean the parts with degreaser 2X, then wipe down with a dry microfiber, then wait 15-20 min, lightly wipe with a tack rag, and apply the clear.

Ailerons are next!
