Brief Description:  Main Spar Arrival and Unpacking

The main spar arrived from Ben Carson at Thatcher Aircraft! It's been a bit of a wait to get to this stage, but it's worth it. Many thanks to Ben for an incredible job on this critical component, one of the few I am not comfortable manufacturing myself.

Maybe next time,

The spar itself is well and truly zinc coated prior to assembly. Out of a simply ludicrous number of solid rivets, I think I saw 3 with crescent markings on the heads, which is outstanding. As I go through the crate and store the wing spars and attach the center section to the fuselage, I'll show some pictures of the spar itself.

Let me say, the packaging was extrordinarily well built to protect the spar. The base was assembled with ludicrously oversized construction nails, bent over to prevent them from pulling loose. The sides and top of the crate are OSB with 2"x4" dimensional lumber framing, assembled with coated exterior grade screws. The interior is, as you can see, packed with ridgid purple foam, the kind used to over the sheathing of residential construction here in North America. The foam was cut down to fit inside the spar caps, to make sure that there were no voids to be found. Frankly, there was enough that I used it to insulate my garage door. Otherwise, disposal would have been tricky.
