Today I planned on drilling the floor pans skins as per the plans in preparation for riviting. Then I got to thinking, this would make the floor less assessible. So, why not use nutplates so the floor could be removed. So, a quick check of the VAF to see if anyone else had done it this way and sure enough there were. However, they said it was a lot of work. Also Van's Support said the same thing in that it was an acceptable alternative from a construction standpoint. Would add more to the build time and increased weight of the nutplates and screws. I figure that since Vans said it was acceptable, I hope to save weight by using electronic avionics, and I want the convenience of being able to remove the floors without drilling out rivets (pop or solid) this would be the way to go.
So, since I don't have a nutplate jig, I tried to emprovise using a washer/screw combo but just did not see to work very well as I could not get the screw driver in place. So, on to plan B. Using a #30 cleco, carefully lined up each hole, then drill the rivet hole, cleco that hole with a #40 and drill the remaining hole.
There are almost 70 nutplates to hold down the floor pans.
