Brief Description:  Right Console #25

Had to take a few days from the project to go on a 10 day work trip....so back to the task!

I started by making a new hinge pin for the door. Of course when you cut hinge for an area the pin is cut the same length unless you pull the pin to make a longer one.....then you have no pin if you want to use the left over hinge. I wanted to be able to remove the door easily so I needed a longer pin in order to extend it throught the bulkhead just behind the compartment.

So I found an old thread on VAF where a guy Paul Dye mentioned buying some hinge pins. I found the post and determined he got them from McMaster-Carr. So I ordered a three foot length of 1/16 th hinge pin. I drilled a small hole and fed the pin into the door hinge from behind and had a small bend in order to easily grab the pin to remove the door.

I sat in the plane and contemplated for a bit on where I wanted to put the door latch for the compartment. After looking and thinking about several options I chose to put it in the forward portion of the door. I measured and re-measured and then drilled the hole for the knob that I also purchased from McMaster-Carr. It is a small and simple knob that requires it to be pushed down and then turned 90 degrees to the other position. It has small pins located on it to make a detent lock in either position. It works great, it's small, simple, and provides positive locking.

Because of the adjustment, I had to use a piece of 3/16 inch aluminum under the angle on the frame in order to increase the thickness of the angle or the latch wouldn't have enough adjustment to hold the door against the frame. I adjusted it for the door to close solidly against the top frame and it is super easy to manipulate.

Cutting the hole for the knob took some craftmanship due to the fact that it has two flat sides to keep it from turning and two round sides for the diameter so it was drill and then file and dremmel out the profile...took a while but it worked out well.
