Brief Description:  Right Console #22

Installing nutplates is a common task in RV building. It is not difficult but includes several steps that all take time. I usually start with a hole drilled in the nutplate location with a 3/32 drill. I have found that using a small diameter drill makes it easier to nail the location you are trying to place the nutplate.

Next I open up the hole to the size to fit the pilot on the nutplate jig for the size nutplate I am going to install. The jig then is positioned on the hole with the pilot inserted and rotated to the place where the nutplate rivet holes are to be located. One of the rivet holes are drilled then the jig is flipped over and a pin on the other side locates the first rivet hole so that the second rivet hole will be exactly 180 degrees opposite the first rivet hole(see photos below).

Next I open up the screw hole to give plenty of clearance for the screw to pass through the aluminum without interference and into the threads of the nutplate.

Next I use the countersink to prep the rivet holes for the flush head rivet.

Finally I rivet the nutplate in place.

So the point is that just putting a nutplate in a part, though not difficult, takes a little time for completing the multi step process. So that is how I spent this work session installing 30 nutplates.
