Brief Description:  Instrument Panel

I began to resolve the instrument panel debacle. Since the opening is tapered, I used feeler
gauges to come up with the gap needing to be filled in the 3 rivet locations. It was going to require a piece of .025 , .032, and .040 aluminum. I cut the three pieces in lengths that would adequately capture the holes with the proper shim thickness. The largest part will be about .100, the next close to .060, and the top hole about .025.

I took the strips and bonded them together. Using a piece of 2.5" plastic pipe I cleco clamped the stack holding the thickest part with the clamp and bent the slight radius on the stack to match the instrument panel radius.....worked perfect.

Next I cleco clamped them in proper locations to the instrument panel and matched drilled the holes. Next I installed the instrument panel along with the spacers to the F-821 skin. I think they will do the job great. The reason I was concerned is riveting the panel and skin without the spacers would have caused the skin to pull in producing large indentations where the rivets are. Of course the rivets will hold the shims in place once set.

I will come up with the best plan on covering up the ugly mis-matched portion of the panel. I think
Vans engineering was very weak when designing the panel and skin mating. Oh well....thats E/AB life!
