Brief Description: Rivet Rudder Cable Fairings and NACA Vent
I decided to rivet the rudder cable fairings tonight. Riveting has been far and few between as I have progressed in the project.....especially when it concerns rivet gun and bucking bars. So I approached the task as slowly and carefully as possible.
My fairing design allowed two rivets to be placed through the longeron on the bottom of the fairings so I had plenty of grip and needed longer rivets which I found in the kit hardware. I also decided not to put a million rivets....I felt 5 would be sufficient, especially since I was coating the backside of the fairing with proseal.
I mixed the proseal that is pretty old...has been in the refridgerator for some time( I found out later that it happened to be the "secret ingredient" my wife used in her casorole that seemed to "stick to my ribs".....she thought it was some kind of sauce...but I digress). I figured since I was mixing some I may as well stick the NACA vent in the fuse.
Anyway, I got the rivets set with one small smiley on the left side. I cut an acid brush to spread the proseal where I wanted it so it wouldn't be squeezed out the edges of the fairing....worked well. Of course after riveting there were a few places where proseal escaped, but using a rag with GOOF OFF adhesive remover really works fantastic!
The NACA vent went on well also. I put the vent on and used a marker to mark the position. When I was happy with that I spread the proseal on the vent itself and set it in position. I pressed it down to set it. Then I took the extra proseal and spread some around and put a fillet around all the edges to add leak protection from water.
