Brief Description:  Proseal tank access covers

I received the proseal from Vans. I had a can but it is way outdated. This one is good till May 2014.

I have a Quick Build (QB) kit which means the tanks were already completed prior to purchase which means it was a messy job I got out of. But in the process I ended up having to remove the access plate on the left tank because there is a Vans Service Bulletin to safety wire the "B" nut on the fuel pick-up tube(see previous post). Anyway I completed the SB on both access plates and they were ready to install.

First I double checked the fuel sending unit resistance and it checked out in accordance with the specifications in the manual. Next I spoke with my build buddy Jim in TX and got some gouge on proceal procedures and practices since he is now an expert having just completed building both of his fuel tanks and has been arm deep in proseal for the last couple months.

I thoroughly cleaned all parts that were going to be Prosealed including vent line fittings, access plates, and sending unit mounting flanges using MEK. I also got a glass jar and soaked the screws in MEK. Next I mixed a batch of Proseal and coated all vent lines and fuel pick-up lines.

Since Proseal has a limited working time before it sets up I only mixed enough to do all the fittings so I could have a fresh batch to seal the plates. I now mixed another batch of Proseal and using popcicle sticks I spread the Proseal around the perimeter to be sealed. It worked well. Then I took the plates and installed them.

When installing the plates I used TORX screws rather than the Phillips head screws provided by Vans. This was a suggestion from a buddy Rick. I ordered stainless steel Torx screws and it worked well. The reason is that if the plates ever had to come off, Phillips have a tendency to strip where Torx won't. I dipped each screw thread in Proseal in order to get a good fuel seal on the screws.

Job complete! This is messy stuff....went through a lot of nitrile gloves in the process. Now on to other things!
