Brief Description:  Remove left wing fuel access plate for SB06-2-23

My build builder Jim sent me a Service Bulletin concerning the need to safety wire the "B" nut connection on the fuel pickup tube. The left fuel access cover along with the fuel sending unit had already been installed and prosealed for the left wing. I really comtemplated whether or not to pull the plate off to see if the SB was complied with. I contacted the man that I bought the QB kit from and asked him if he complied with the SB....he couldn't remember if he did. So after more thought and speaking with Jim and tech support at Vans, I decided to delve into the task of removing the access cover and inspecting the installation.

Removing the cover was easier than I thought. I used a little razor blade to cut around the lip of the cover after removing all the screws. Then with a torch I used a little heat on the left side of the panel in order to soften the proseal. After that I had a glazing puddy knife that I used to pry off the cover using a couple taps from a rubber mallet it found its way under the cover and I began to work gently around the cover till it came completely off! The process only took about 35 minutes.

I have read a number of posts on VAF concerning removing old proseal. Then a thought came to me about a product I love.....GOOF OFF! It takes adhesives and glue off of things. So I tried it on the old proseal.....the result: ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!!!! With small amounts of Goof off and paper towels I was able to clean off the old proseal in short order! Next I performed the SB as required and safety wired as per the SB. I also noted that the actual float on the sending unit was pointing the wrong direction, so I removed it and installed it the correct way. Now I am just waiting on my proseal to come in along with some torx screws which I will use to replace the cover fasteners which are phillips head. Feel good that I took the time to check!
