Brief Description:  Left Elevator countersinking

Just a short time in the shop today. I prepared E-606PP and E-702 by countersinking for the rivets that will hold them in place. Countersinking was necessary instead of normally dimpling because the back side has to be smooth and cannot have the back side protruding as is the case of dimpling.

There are two challanges in countersinking: First, making sure you don't countersink too deep and in the process. Second, operating the countersink tool at a speed that will not produce "chatter" marks on the countersink finish. Chatter occurs generally when running the countersink at a speed too fast. Chatter shows as a bumpy finish on the countersunk surface instead of a smooth finish.

Countersunk lead counterweight and dimpled E-713. Note the difference of the countersink on the lead weight which actually removes the material to form the 100 degree surface verses the dimple which uses a male and female dies to form the metal with the 100 degree surface without removing any material.
