Brief Description:  Rudder Fabrication

Began working on the rudder. I made a rough cut on part R-710 that installs to the base of the rudder. My friend Jim in Texas is a little bit ahead of me in the tail building process. He mentioned to me that when he cut R-710 iaw the specs it ended up being cut in such a way that there was not the minimum material thickness required for the rivets. He ended up having to order another one. So with his helpful warning I have rough cut the part in order to keep from the same mistake. I have left about .25 inches extra and will trim carefully to fit as I assemble the skeleton for the rudder. Thank you Jim for the heads up!

I then started the stiffners for the rudder skin. These parts come in a long piece of angle that is prepunched for reference, but all 16 stiffners have to be marked and cut. Then there is the process of removing all the burrs and rounding edges.....it is a long and tedious process. No one will ever see these items once they are installed, but I guarantee you they were finished as pretty as the visible stuff will be! The issue is that I consider EACH part a critical part and give detail and attention to each one seperately.

Next I removed the plastic protection coating from inside the rudder and clecod all the ribs in their place. They are now ready to be match drilled with the rudder skin.

The holiday activities have really been keeping me from building on the airplane due to an extensive travel schedule and taking little time off........will look to pick it up more in the new year!
