Brief Description:  Make and Install Lower Wing Tip Stiffiners

I decided that the bottom of the wingtips needed a little stiffining and decided just to do it (despite the fact that I really didn't feel like it haha).

So it was the same process.....band saw and sanding block helped me to form the rounded pieces of foam from the pink foam material I got from Rob and Rick years ago. Once again the foam cuts great with the bandsaw and then sanding. I decided that making the pieces the width of the foam panel which is 24" was sufficient length to stiffen the trailing portion of the wingtip where it flexed the most. I cut the strips just under 1/2 inch thick. On the lower stiffiners I decided to make the width of the strips 3/4 inches down from the approx. 1" thickness that the foam board comes in.

After cutting the strips out I then set up a 45 degree angle to run the foam along the edge to cut the corners off and make it easier to complete. Then I used a sanding block with some 220 grit sandpaper and took time to shape the surface rounded across the width and at the very ends tapered them for the last 2-3 inches to feather them into the wingtips.

I cut a single fiberglass strip for each stiffiner, mixed some micro and laid in the fillets and then covered the foam strips with the fiberglass and peel ply. I set them in place on the airplane to make sure they would form to the curvature while curing.
