Brief Description:  Wingtip Pin Retainer Blocks & Foam Stiffiners

Today I worked on completing the wingtip hinge retaining blocks. I got both blocks drilled and using the #3 bolt to set the block in place I drew the lines for the profile. I milled the thickness and checked that they will fit in the area of the wingtip rib.

I used the pins to locate the position of the holes for the pins. I then drilled the holes to within about an inch of the rear part of the blocks. You don't want to drill the holes all the way through because that defeats the purpose of retaining the hinge pins from working their way out of the block. I cut the pins to length and used my engraving tool to mark them as well.

I found two AN3R6 drilled head bolts in my bench stock that were perfect for holding the retainer block to the wing tip ribs. I then drilled a small hole in each block to safety wire the bolts in place. These are located in a place that you want to make sure they are secure as if they came loose or the bolt backed out it could jam the aileron.

After completing that I began to work on stiffiners for the wingtips. The wingtips are strong but they are large and tend to "oil can" if you would due to the large area. This is not really a concern for fiberglass but a couple of well placed pieces of foam bonded on the inside may just add a bit of rigidity to the tips. I worked on a couple thoughts I had before quitting for the night.
