Brief Description:  Cutting and Fitting the Canopy-Part 2

Note: this was all accomplished on 10-19 but has to put the next day to keep it sequential)

Rob and I continued with the process. He was using the cutoff wheel and I was doing the sanding between cuts. Once again....it is a time consuming process.

We continued carrying the canopy back and forth between the basement and the workshop in back to make subsequent cuts. The routine was the same...measure.....cut...sand. Rob actually uses an electric belt sander to sand after cutting. I wouldn't have thought that....but he uses it all the time so he brought his for me to borrow. The belt sander works great and quick. It gets the edge sanded to the point where it can be prepped for moving to measure for the next cut fairly quickly.

Another help I got was a tip from Jim about using popcicle sticks for marking cuts. By drilling holes in three sticks at intervals of 1/4 - 1/2 - 1 inch, the sticks work wonderful for the front part of the canopy to mirror the contour of the skin on the canopy so you get a nice fit. The different sizes get you from rough to finish so you can creep up on the cuts as the canopy gets closer to finish. I found that a hole about .150 thousands will fit the tip of a "Fine Point Sharpie" well to hold it in place.

A good long day in the workshop. I cannot thank Rob enough for all the assistance and expertise he provided me in getting the canopy a lot closer to being ready to bond. It still has a liitle ways to go but it got a good lift down the road. Thanks to Jim as well on the mentoring and tips....it all helps in the process of such a delicate and nerve wracking process as the canopy!
