Brief Description:  Top & Bottom Cowl Side Cuts

Another excellent day working in the shop!!! Rob came over and continued to work with me on the cowling. In the last session we worked on the rear firewall portion and the inlet areas getting them trimmed as well as the Skybolt fastener flanges.

Today it was time to tackle the sides of the cowling and get them to be cut straight and meet each other in the middle. We started by drilling all the Skybolt holes through all the drill bushings making sure to remove as much of the slack in the cowling as possible to get a tight fit.

With the holes drilled we were able to cleco the top cowling on and get a good straight line right where it needed to be with the lasar level and get it adjusted perfectly. I then went along with a fine tip sharpie and marked right on the lasar line. We then used the 18 inch flex scale and connected the dots which I put about every 2 1/2 inches or so.

After marking both sides of the top cowl we took it outside and used mostly the hand held belt sander to remove the majority of material since the line went from zero to about a half inch it was not worth trying to cut any as it would be begging for an OOPS! We then used the Perma Grit sanding bars and a piece of 3 foot alum angle with a 180 grit sanding paper taped to it and got the edge nice and straight.

Next phase was install the top and bottom cowls and mark the bottom cowl with the edge of the top cowl and cut and process as we did the top. We then worked the hinges and drilled them and put them in position and made the openings for the pin covered that I have on order!1.

A full day and lots accomplished through synergy.....thanks a million to Rob!!!!!
