Brief Description:  Front Baggage Door Blocks

I continued on the baggage door latch blocks tonight. My plan is to mark the location of the pins and get the blocks put in place without following Vans instructions of drilling a large hole through the firewall. To do this I put layers of electrical tape to take up the clearance and be certain the pins would hit the tape on each side. The top piece of tape was a yellow paper masking tape. I then took a pencil and rubbed the lead on the end of each locking pin to "coat the pin with lead". I closed the baggage door tightly and turned the key in the lock. The rod ends made nice circles for the pin locations.

Next I put the blocks in place for front and rear centering the pin hole on the mark made on the tape. I drew the outside block perimeter on the bulkheads with a fine point marker which allowed me to measure and drill the locations of the block attachment screws in the bulkhead and firewall. I had to mill about .050 off each block surface as they were too thick. I set the blocks in position using double side tape to hold them in place within the lines made with the marker...small pieces of tape just to hold the blocks while shutting the door but allowing them to move into position when I engaged the locking pins.

I closed the door and after adjusting the blocks several times the pins engaged. I then used the attachment screw locations to drill into the blocks from outside the bulkheads.

Thats the end of tonights session!
