Brief Description:  Foot well attach screws

Having drilled out the six double lug nutplates for installing them on the rear support of the footwell floor skin I had to change strategy on the two outboard L & R footwell nutplates. I couldn't really get the double lug holes drilled easily and I figured it would even be harder to set the rivets since they were so close to the bulkhead.

The key in this homebuilding gig is to have options. My option was to use a single lug #8 nutplate which I keep a stock of just for these situations. Since the drill jig is cumbersome in this tight area I simply used my screw & spacer method where I insert a screw into the bottom hole with a spacer and set the single lug nutplate on top and tighten the screw. With the lug on top of the footwell angle I simply drill the rivet holes in location and then remove the nutplate.

After doing all that I countersunk all the holes for the rivets and opened up the diameter of the #8 holes in order to give better clearance for lining up everything. I usually do this on holes such as floors as they have no shear loads on them. Another thing I do is run a tap through the nutplates to loosen up the fit a little...it relaxes that locking action a bit and makes them easier to get out when you need to.....I don't do that on structural items though...only parts that may be coming on and off.

I vacuumed out all the metal chips AGAIN and cleaned the bottom of the belly compartments.
