Brief Description:  Prepping and Sika Bonding #4

Well today is the day I will spend some quality time bonding with my canopy! haha Other commitments postponed the bonding process yesterday but now I am ready to attack the "one shot" to get it right process of bonding.

I consulted one more time with Jim to ascertain that I had all ready and the process down. The process in a nutshell is this:

1- Clean all surfaces with alcohol and blow off with clean air and let dry
2- Brush on Aktivator 205 to the canopy and canopy frame - let dry (about 10 mins or so)
3- Brush on Sika Primer 209D to the canopy and canopy frame bonding area and let dry(30mins?)
4- Set canopy on frame in proper position
5- Bond with Sika 295UV to bottom and top of canopy bonding area.

That’s the process in a nutshell. Now for other details:

a) Get a bunch of acid brushes - I would have about 20 on hand. I was able to use one to brush all the Aktivator 205 on all the parts. I used at least 6 brushes for putting the Sika Primer 209D on the frame and canopy. The primer begins to get gooped up on the brush so when that starts to happen just throw it away and grab another one....it's not worth the fight with a hardening brush.

b) I spoke with Jim and he said it seems better to start with the bottom first. I felt the same way...it gives you a little learning on how the Sika flows and practice. The bottom doesn't need to look as good ad the top....so I would suggest starting on the bottom. I took it off the stand and set it upside down on padding on my work bench which did the trick. After I completed it my wife helped me put it back on the stand.

c) Have plenty of vinyl gloves and rags available. Sika wipes off pretty easily but you need a supply of clean rags. I use the thicker Venom nitrile gloves because they are a lot more durable.

d) I cut the tip to have about a 1/4 inch hole and about a 30 degree angle...that seemed to work well. Be careful you don't just push big globs of Sika through the space and have a mess of goop on the other side!
