Brief Description:  Cutting and Fitting the Canopy-Part 1

The other day was a beautiful day and after going to the post office I decided to go an extra three miles and check out whats happening at the airport. I found Rob and Jim at Robs hangar and we ended up sitting around chatting on the couch in the hangar. It was the perfect weather for flying as well as hangar flying....Rob had just come back from a short flight so we sat and did the hangar flying. In the course of the discussion the "when is your build going to be done?" question came up and I told them I would be starting the canopy this weekend. Well Rob has completed two RVs an RV8 and RV7. Both are excellent examples of workmanship. Well one thing led to another and Rob volunteered to come give assistance on the weekend.....ahhhh, I am not looking that gift horse in the mouth! Yessssss....I would love the expertise Rob has to assist me.

I began in the morning with getting an extra table set up for tools. When Rob got there he said that it gets really messy....so we decided to carry the canopy out to the secondary workshop from the basement. I still haven't taken down my temporary paint booth in the shop so it worked well as a place to cut the canopy. I keep the temperature around 68ish...so I brought my small propane space heater into the shop and it made the place a toasty 84 degrees....excellent for cutting canopies!

You can tell Rob's experience as to how he thinks things through and attacks the tasks. Rob is very talented but there is no doubt he has gained skills over the process of his builds(he built a biplane also).

So we moved the canopy to the shop and began removing the excess plexi flanges from the canopy. Fortunately the shop has a large compressor that kept up easily with the air grinder.

The process involves time and patience. Rob has them both and was very skilful and methodical in the cutting processl
