Brief Description:  Canopy Rail and Spacer (cont)

I drilled the screw holes to size through the cap and the spacer. Next, since everything was clecoed well, I used the countersink to get the screw heads countersunk.

I began the riveting process next. The plans call out for using AN426AD3-6 rivets. The -6 portion of the number designates the length of the rivet. Using those rivets only filled the countersink for the rivet partially. I had some stock -7 rivets which are a little longer. When I used the longer rivet it filled the countersink better....so I used those for riveting the spacer to the cap. I had just enough to use in the holes other than the first couple that I did in the beginning.

If you look at photo #1 you can see the two rivets. The one on the left side was done with the shorter rivet and the one on the right with the longer. I just wanted the hole to be filled more. Because it took a little extra bucking to get the longer rivets to set, it put a slight bow in the rail. The bow was very slight and would pose no problem in the installation.

Next I took time to remove some primer from Jim's rail assembly and then use some sanding to make a grain on the parts so they would look fairly uniform after applying the hard anodize to them.
