Brief Description:  Cutting canopy-1

Picked up some adjustable saw horses from Home Aircraft Supply. Adjusted them up to a 34” height. Nancy and I set the canopy on the bed of my pickup for about an hour—temps under the canopy showed 109 degrees. After an hour in the sun we moved the canopy into the garage and onto the sawhorses. To cut the flange off of the canopy, I used a 1.5” diamond cut off wheel in my dremel—wheel said to use 10k to 15k rpm, but I found 20k to work pretty well. I sat on a low stool inside the canopy and began cutting the flange about a third way from the rear moving forward. I found that 3 passes of about 6” each worked pretty well. I cut the left side forward to the approximate center where I separated the flange at the front. Did the same for the right side. Next I finished the cut at the front and followed by cutting at the rear. All seemed to go very well. I let the dremel cool down after about 30 minutes of cutting—didn’t want to burn it up. After the flange was completely removed, I sanded the edges with a 100 grit block, followed by 180 grit. Some of my cut lines weren’t exactly straight, but I’ve got several more cuts to get them even. After sanding, we moved the canopy back to the fuse—sits better already. I taped the front of the canopy and drew a line from the center back along each side approximately 18”. This will be my next cut. I will wait to take any off of the sides until after the canopy is separated from the windscreen. While waiting for the dremel to cool, I worked on the 661 slide block. A 5/16” reamer works very well to countebore for the clevis pin. Once the pin was set, I laid out the hole location for the cotter pin which retains the clevis pin. Drilled to 1/16” and inserted the cotter pin thru the block and pin. It’s a very tight fit—don’t think it will come loose—if it does, will just JB Weld it and install again. Getting the flange cut without issue was a very good day indeed—however, take a week just to clean up all of the plexi dust!
