Brief Description:  Canopy Side Rails-1

Since I got along so well with the canopy frame, I thought surely drilling the rails to the fuse would be much easier. Wrong! Plans show to set the rail width to 25 5/8” (outside to outside), which I did. I finally got the frame width adjusted so that the rollers ran smoothly in the center of the tracks. Laid out the remaining holes in the rails and clamped into position. I had previously drilled the foremost hole and now I drilled the next three holes per the instructions in the manual. Seemed easy enough. The rails were clecoed to the fuse and the back of the rails were set to the specified width of 25 5/8”. Before drilling the rear two holes, I made a mark thru the longeron on the the bottom side of the rails to check where the holes will come out in the rails. Hmm, this won’t work—in order for the rear hole to be centered in the rail, the rails will have to be pulled in at least 1/8” on each side. Well, this changes the location of the 3 holes in the center of the rail. Also, the rails are no longer exactly parallel-the frame does not roll as smoothly in the last 6" to 8" of travel. Clamped the rails down and used a right angle drill to drill the aft hole--thru the longeron and the rail. Then I drilled the second hole from the aft end—thur the longeron and the rail. Drilling the front 3 holes to 1/8” brought them into alignment . However the 4th hole does not line up. In order to keep the ¼” edge distance and not figure 8 the hole in the fuse, I will need to relocate the hole in the rail, then drill a new hole thru the fuse. Think I will move the hole forward about ¾” and fill the old hole with JB Weld. This will have to be done on both the left and right rails.
