Brief Description:  VS & Rudder Tips-9

Happy Easter! My logs are getting where they span part of the current day and part of the previous day—all dependent on when the epoxy has set up enough to sand. I sanded the rudder tip some more after the last application of micro. The top is finally built up enough to match the profile of the VS tip. I discovered one spot on the side that needs just a bit more fill to round out the contour. I shot some filler primer on the aft end of the VS tip—it revealed some high spots. I sanded it some more and shot on another coat. I’m using Dupli-Color filler primer. Cheap stuff, but works for this purpose. After a couple more sandings & primings, got the aft end done for now. Next I dimpled the VS skin and c/s the glass tip. I mixed up some resin which I first used to glass in some tape strips inside the HS tip as reinforcement. Well, that took a bit longer than I planned. I added some micro to the remaining resin and spread it on flanges of the VS tip. Quickly clecoed in position, then installed the CS4-4 pop rivets. I began to spread the excess micro that squeezed out of the joint, but it was very stiff. I checked the mixture in the cup—it was already hard. Whew! Just barely got the tip on in time. While waiting on this to cure, I ripped the peel ply from the rudder tip. Then sanded the sides of the rudder tip where I had added the glass strip—naturally, it will need more micro to get the edges smoothed out. Seems this fiberglass project could last a lifetime! BTW, just noticed I had passed the 1000 hour mark earlier in the month. Whoo-Hoo!
