Brief Description:  HS TIps-5, VS & Rudder Tips-8

Within this fiberglass project, I have several areas that I’m working on at the same time. Last night I sanded the micro that I had applied to the rudder tip—it is beginning to get close to the height of the VS tip. Next, I removed the foam from the tip of the HS. Then I sanded the epoxy that had been applied to the aft side of the VS tip. Looks like the 3 coats of epoxy has filled all of the pin holes. Today I mixed up another batch of epoxy. Using a 1” wide brush, I “painted” on some epoxy to the seam where the rudder tip meets the rudder. After the area was “wetted”, I applied a layer of .003” thick glass strip (1” wide). I started at the front of the tip and pulled the glass down each side, brushing a little more epoxy on as I went. When I got to the aft end, I cut one side about ¼” short of the end and wrapped the other side around to meet the cut. Then I applied a layer of peel ply. Never done peel ply before--more experimenting on my experimental, I suppose. Next, I applied epoxy to the inside of the HS tip and layed in a second layer of glass. With the remaining epoxy, I added micro to make a very thick paste. I applied this to the glass on outside of the HS tip and then added a small amount to the top of the rudder tip—hopefully this will be the final coat to match the tip with the VS.
