Brief Description:  Backing strips for lens cover-Left

Today I worked on the lens cover for the left tip. Rather than drill and rivet nutplates in the tip for screws to attach the cover, I decided to use a backing strip inside the tip. I cut some .025 scrap to make an “L” shaped strip for the top and bottom. After I got the strips to fit, I marked them thru the mounting holes in the tip, then used my Whitney punch to punch the mounting holes. I drilled the holes in the strips up to a #28, then used my #6 nutplate jig to drill the nutplate attachment holes. I used a deburr tool to put a small countersink in the backing strips for some NAS1097 rivets. Used my pneumatic squeezer to set the 12 rivets. I drilled the holes in the fiberglass tip up to #28 and used a #40 countersink to countersink the holes in the plexi cover. I drilled a bunch of 1/16” holes in the backing strip and scratched up the surface with #60 paper. I will bond these strips inside the wing tip with resin and flox. I installed the lens cover using #6 screws and tinnerman washers to check for fit—looks good. Tomorrow I’ll do the same for the right tip, then mix some resin.
