Brief Description:  Install L. & R. wing root fairings

My goal today was to get the F-872APP Fwd Wing Root Fairings and F-872BPP Aft Wing Root Fairings installed. I started with fitting the aft fairing-left side. The holes in the fairing do not line up with the holes in the wing skin—fairings contact the fuse side. It took many trips to the scotchbrite wheel to get the fairings with enough clearance to cleco them to the wing skin. I fit both left and right fairings. I clecoed the fwd. fairing to the aft fairing and drew a line for the joggle. I offset the bend line by 1/32”per the drawings. I used a tip from Bill Crissenger’s log and sandwiched some .040 on front side and the back side of the bend line with a small offset. I taped the .040 to the fairing and clamped it in the vice—cranked it down really really tight. Made a nice joggle. Clecoed the aft fairing back in position and match drilled a #30 hole thru the front of the aft fairing into the spar flange. Repeat for the right side. Next I marked a ¼” line on the tank skin to use as a reference for match drilling using the fwd fairing. I clecoed the fwd fairing to the aft fairing and the spar flange. Again, it took many trips to the scotchbrite wheel to get the fairing to fit against the fuselage. I match drilled the first 4 holes in the fwd fairing, then marked a line representing the center of the leading edge of the wing. Removed the fairing and worked a contour around a 1.5” pvc pipe—took several trial fittings to get just the right shape that would allow the fairing to hug the leading edge of the wing. After getting a nice fit, I clecoed the aft end of the fwd fairing to a hole in the bottom skin/wing skin. I then marked the remaining holes in the fairing and match drilled to the tank rib skin. Repeat this process for the right side. I drilled a 1/16” hole in a small stick which I used to mark the 3/16” cut line for the fairings. Marked the fwd and aft fairing on each side. I need to remove and trim the fairings, then move to fitting the flap fairings. Whew--long day, but got lots
