Brief Description:  Fitting L & R tips-3

I had previously drilled the fiberglass wing tips to the end of the wing. I am using the hinge method to attach the tips. I had to repeatedly install, trim a little, then re-install until I had some clearance between the aileron and the tip. Both tips fit about 3/16” higher than the aileron. The left tip aligns with the aileron as close as the eye can see—that’s good enough for me. I sanded the tip across the aft end to get the height to match the aileron. I need to finalize the clearance between the tip and aileron, but will wait until after the hinge is riveted in place. Now, for the right tip. Fit is pretty good—EXCEPT it does not align with the aileron—off about 1/2”—yuk! I read all the posts on VAF I could find regarding this issue—some builders split the end of the tip, re-aligned then glassed it back together. Others say the holes need to be redrilled. I tried clecoing the top side and checked the alignment—still no go. Removed those clecoes and clecoed the bottom side. By re-adjusting the position of the top, I can bring the trailing edge into alignment with the aileron. I marked the holes thru the skin and removed the tip. Looks like if I re-drill the holes (about 1/8”) off, it will allow for alignment without splitting the trailing edge. So, I sanded the gel-coat where the previous holes were. Tomorrow, I’ll sand the inside and glass over the holes with fiberglass resin. Then I can re-install and drill new mounting holes.
