Brief Description: Install nutplates for wing root fairings-1
I moved the right wing to my work table and began installing nutplates on the upper skin (F-702) to which the aft root fairing (F-872BPP) is attached. These holes had previously been machine countersunk. I squeezed in NAS 1097 rivets to secure the K-1000-08 nutplates. Then I moved to the left wing which was still in the cradle and did the same thing. Then I riveted on the K-1100-08 nutplates which are used for attachment of the W-704 lower center fuselage skin. The aft most hole for the aft wing root fairing (upper skin) calls for a dimple with a dimpled single leg nutplate. Well, the area where the nutplate is supposed to attach slightly overlaps one of the inner wing skins. If the skin is dimpled, the nutplate would not sit flush. So, I made a small spacer that nests against the overlap and dimpled both the wing skin and spacer—this also slightly dimples the overlapping skin. I turned the single leg nut plate horizontal, installed a screw to hold everything in position, then back drilled thru the nutplate into the spacer and the skin for the rivet holes. I lightly c/s the skin for NAS rivets then riveted the whole shebang together using the pneumatic squeezer. I’ll do the same for the right wing.
