Brief Description:  Machining custom tie-down blocks

Here's the start of machining the custom wing tie-downs from a solid block of AL (I think it was actually 2024 plate salvaged from the dumpster at work years ago in Michigan). The piece was BARELY large enough to make what I wanted: Two 'dog bone' shaped tie-down blocks. The 'ears' of the dog bones are for bolts that will hold the blocks to the spar strips. The rest of the block tapers from the bottom where it is nearly square in cross-section to a wedge-shaped 'point' at the top side (end closest to top skin when mounted to spar). The center of the tapered section is removed (to a thickness of ~0.125"), the width of the resulting 'channel' just large enough for the head of an AN3 bolt. On the side that attaches to the spar, over the 'web' portion of the spar are two 'bosses' that serve as stand-offs from the main spar web. No displays on the mill, so everything was done by 'counting the dial', 'eyeballing' & liberal use of layout die & digital calipers. Had to carefully plan which parts to machine away 1st so as to always leave something on the part that could be clamped in the vice...
