I used the cutting wheel to cut the slot. BUT notice I taped thick metal rulers above and below the slot to help ensure straight cuts. This worked great. My cuts are straight and just barely big enough for the handle to fit into.
I straightened the handle per plan instructions. It was bent about 3/16 out of alignment.
Then I used a 1" washer to mark the cut out and cut it on the band saw.
