Brief Description:  Applying Power

Turns out applying power is not a small issue because you need about 30 amps of 12 volt. Batteries will do this for a short while. Battery charges don't put out this much amps. You cannot charge and drain a battery at the same time. It is either charging or giving volts.

From Van's I learned most guys use a power supply. I found one on Amazon for about $60 bucks. It has adjustable voltage and amp meter. This is nice because I can see how many amps various pieces of equipment suck

I found out that the power supply is not enough because it can't handle surges brought on by turning on landing lights. So you need a battery too. How does it work?

The power supply acts like an alternator. Both the plane is being supplied volts, and charging the battery at the same time. But when lights are turned on there is a momentary need for more volts and that surge is provided by the battery and then things settle down.

I discovered this because when I turned on the landing lights with just the power supply the comm and other electronics would take a hit and sometimes reset. They were being starved power for an instant. Works fine with a battery an the power supply.
