Brief Description:  Seatbelts, part 1

A seatbelt did come with the aircraft kit, but I consider it inadequate for this type of plane, so I purchased a four-point racing harness. This not only will secure the occupants much better, but it’s designed to unhook itself with one easy motion. If the plane flipped over in the water, you don’t want to struggle getting loose from the seatbelt.

To make the harness work, you need a bar back behind your head to attach it to. Instead of just attaching it to a hard surface, I’m going to use the seatbelt retraction mechanism that came with the stock seatbelt, and connect that to a bar to hold each side of the upper harness, so the harness will move with the occupant, but only tighten up if there’s a quick force forward.

To make the bar, I cut a ½” x 1” bar of aluminum to 14 inches, and shaped the ends to follow the roofline. I created brackets to hold it to the diagonal root support tube at the roof.
