Brief Description:  Ignition relays

I put gas in the tank for the first time, sumped out about a gallon from the bottom to make sure it was clean, then ran the fuel pump and collected about a gallon at the fuel hose at the engine, to ensure that line was clean, plus to prime some fuel in the hose before starting. I then connected the hose to the fuel rail, turned on the master power, and fired 'er up. After a few cranks, she fired up smoothly, but what I learned was, with the alternator now going and powering the electrical supply, turn off the batteries and the engine keeps humming along. So, I actually have to devise a way to turn the engine off.

Another thing I thought of... right now I have both fuel pumps on ON/OFF switches, but my real fuel pump switch is an ON/ON switch, just like the select between the main ECU and the backup one. This means that anytime I turn on the master switch, one of the fuel pumps would be working, which is not what I want, because perhaps I'm not going to start the engine, but just want to do some flight planning on the avionics.

To solve these problems, I installed four separate relays for the main ECU power, backup ECU power, main fuel pump, and backup fuel pump. I connected a wire from the IGN terminal of the ignition switch to signal the relays to come on. Actually, with everything redundant in the plane, I ran two signal wires, because I can't stand to have only one source of possible failure. Now the engine computer and fuel pumps do not come on with the main switch, they only come on when the ignition switch is in the ON or START position, and the engine shuts down when the key is turned to the OFF position.
