Brief Description:  ELT installation

My granddaugther is visiting, so not much work getting done. The ELT arrived and I managed to sneek away for a few hours today. I had previously installed the Van's ELT mount using Van's plans. Although I did not purchase an ELT from Van's I did purchase the same model they sell. So I was all set to quickly install the ELT. Not so fast buckeroo! The ELT mount does not match the installed nutplates or any other hole in the mount panel.

Okay, back to square one. First this is the one component that must be installed IAW the ELT manufacture's instructions. Those are installed in such a way that the unit is level in forward flight and within 10 degrees of the longitudinal center line of the aircraft. To find the position of level in flight I measured from the longeron down to the location of the ELT mount. The mount sits approximately 10 degrees off the centerline of the aircraft, so to ensure the ELT is within 10 degrees I added spacers on the forward edge (see image three.)

I drilled the four screw locations and realized I would never get nuts and washers on the forward two screws. Okay back up a couple of steps. The only real solution is nutplates. The only way nutplates will get installed is to remove the original Vans panel. So I drilled out the rivets, installed the nutplates and riveted the panel back in place. Of course I am leaving out the process of drilling the nutplate rivet locations, dimpling, deburring and riveting. In any event the ELT mount is in place.

Next is locating the antenna and running the cable.
