Brief Description:  Canopy release - 02

Just a lot of fine details getting the release installed. After pulling everything off the aircraft the first task was to install nutplates in the channel to support the two bolts you can see in image one. So I installed the release system, positioned the UHVM block so the rods were level and marked the bolt locations with a drill. The UHVM block had already been cut to size and the bolt holes drilled. Everything came apart for final drilling, then on to deburing, dimpling and riveting the nutplates.

The next step was to install the pull handle, So I reinstalled the release system and started playing with the position of the lever. You can not see it in the photos, but the lever is welded to a steel tube that slides over another tube running up the center of the UHVM block. That inner tube is welded to the "eared" top piece that is connected to the push tubes. You need to position the lever correctly to ensure the enough travel to pull the pins out of the canopy hinge. After marking what seems like the best location I pulled everything off so I could drill a hole for a retention bolt. Once the rentention bolt was installed I put everything back in place for a final test fit. All seems okay, the mechanism moves smoothly and the pins move the correct distance. Tomorrow I will touch up some primer and then put everything back in the aircraft for a final fit test.
