Brief Description:  Longerons and fuselage

Today I went to work on the longerons. Although I thought I had bent them to the specifications in the plans, they did not match the F-770 forward skin. So, the first thing I worked on was getting the bend to match the forward skin. It took a little longer than I anticipated, due in part to my need to continually check the longeron against the skin. I think I spent as much time tweaking the bend as I did working on the entire longeron. Oh well, they fit the forward skin very well. I was going to say perfectly, but there is always room to make it a little better.

After working on the longerons I realized I had not cut the 1 1/2" hole in the side skins for the steps. Of course, this meant taking those *&%$#%&* side skins off again. Removing them is easy, installing them....well not so easy. But the holes weren't going to get done any other way. So, off they came and two holes were drilled in the appropriate place. Then the skins went back on (yes, with difficulty) to check the alignment of the holes with the baggage ribs. I still need to cut a radius in those ribs and I used the new holes as a pattern to mark the ribs. I will remove them next time to cut those radii.

Next step was to install the side arm rests and drill them to size. Easily done and now they are removed awaiting installation. They get riveted after the skin is riveted on. The last step of the day was reviewing the directions for bending the side skin to match the radius of the fuselage. What is not apparent from the third photo is the aft portion is curved, but the front portion is almost a 90 degree bend. The instructions are pretty clear, so it should be relatively easy.

I did check the length of the longerons compared to the forward skins. I was sure they were going to end up short. Nope, a little long. I thought the measurement for the distance from the end of the longeron to the end of the side skin as was 5/8. The right was exactly 5/8" and the left was 19/32. I double checked the plans and the measurement
