Brief Description:  Fitting the longerons and side skins

No photos today. I spent three hours fitting the right longeron and attempting to fit the right forward skin. This entailed cutting a slot in the longeron for the F-711 bulkhead and cutting the longeron to the correct length. I had measured and marked the length when I was working on bending the longerons to shape. The total length is a measurement taken before the bending and as they are already bent to shape, they are either the right length or not. Turned out they were the correct length (I think.)

After cutting the longeron I had to enlarge the three slots in the aft bulkheads (F-706, 707 and 708) so the longeron would fit. I used my Dremel tool, it took a couple of minutes. You would think it was be the correct size, but I guess this adds to the 51%. The longeron fit well in the aft portion of the aircraft, but the forward portion from F-704 forward seem too short. Too short by about an 1/2 inch. I wanted to double check so I attempted to attach the forward side skin F-770. It fit fine in the forward section, but was 11/16 ths off the rivet line that attaches to the aft section. I moved things, I lifted the tail, I lowered the tail, I lowered F-704. I swore ... a lot. But reason prevailed. I have learned that when it is not fitting together it is something I have done. So I packed everything up and went home to the internet to do some research. I found this thread on www.vansairforce

http://www.vansairforce.com/community/showthread.php?t=39880&highlight=F-770

This gentlemen had EXACTLY the same problem. Almost down to the measurements. And in the thread two or three other guys jumped in with the same issue. Turns out I need to raise the F-705 bulkhead until the rivet line matches, cleco it and it will all come together. The gentlemen who started the thread added another message that this fixed the alignment problem AND his longeron no longer was short, it fact it might be a tad bit long. So, I will get back out there and fix this non-problem.
