Brief Description:  Fitting the elevators

Construction has slowed way down as I continue to wait for the rest of my kit from Vans. I decided to save $5,000.00 and change my order from a quick build fuselage to a slow build. After I changed the order Vans let me know my QB wings will be in the first week of August. To save shipping cost I am going to wait to ship the fuselage with the wings.
Today I worked on mounting the elevators to the horizontal stabilizer. The plans do tell you to trim a small section of the HS so the elevator will swing freely. I have seen these required trim job on other web sites so I knew it was coming. As I started to fit the elevator I discovered the AN3 bolts would not slide into the hangers for the bearings. The powder coating needed to be cleaned out. So, I cleaned the four hanger bearings to get ready to accept the retaining bolts. I knew that I was going to put them in and take them out a few times and I did not want to put a lot of wear on the bolts. I went to the hardware store and purchased 5/32 " allen wrenchs. They fit perfectly and with the 90 degree bend, make the installation very easy.
After mounting the left elevator I marked the area that needed to be removed, removed the elevator and went to work trimming. Image 2 shows the area before trimming and Image 3 shows the area after the elevator was remounted.
