Brief Description:  Riveting the VS

The pictures are very good quality, but that is the vertical stablizer aft spar and doubler. I worked on riveting those two parts together. The plans call for a AN470AD4-6 rivet. It seemed like every fourth or fifth was badly set as if the rivet was too long. I did not like the way they looked so I drilled out 10 (yes, ten) rivets. I took my time and did not enlarge any of the holes. There are two that I put back in that I still do not like. I am going to drill them out tomorrow and replace them with 4-5s or 4s. I need to double check the thickness, but it seems like a 4-5 is a better length. I also noticed the dimpling for the flush rivets was not deep enough. These are the rivets at the bottom of the spar where it connects to the fuselage. I will fix that tomorrow as well.
