Brief Description:  More on the tail fairing

Only had a couple of hours to work on the airplane today, tried to make the most of it. I want to get this airplane done and this fiberglass is taking too long. The layups I did yesterday did not have the effect on the fairing I wanted. The right side still did not lay down flat. It would almost be easier to make a mold and make my own fairing.

I sanded away most of yesterday's work. The only solution left was to sand down the existing fairing until the right side was paper thin. Finally I got it to lay flat on almost all the surfaces. By surfaces I mean flat against the curve of the aft fuselage and the horizontal stabilizer. I do not want any stress when the attaching screws pull the fairing tight against the skin.

After cleaning up the dust I covered the packing tape (I had covered the aircraft surfaces with packing tape) with carnuba car wax for a release. Putting the fairing back in place I taped it into position, just to keep it from moving. I laid down two layups on the right side. Hopefully this will cure and retain the correct curvature. I will know tomorrow. There are still a couple of areas that will need some attention, but if this works I will be able to move on from fiberglass hell.

No photos. No time, plus hasn't everyone seen wet fiberglass before.
