Vans recommends a shim between the forward spar of the vertical stabilizer and the forward spar of the horizontal stabilizer if there is any space between the two. After mounting the vertical stabilizer and tightening all the bolts, I decided to remove the nuts on the forward mount to see if there was any separation. There was a small amount. So I fabricated a small shim and installed it.
