Brief Description: Fun with fiberglass - elevator tips
One of the details to deal with is the edge of the elevator tips. We could have a long discussion about how to finish the edge, some say do nothing and others spend a lot of time with filler. I don't have a lot of time and I am not interested in filler, so here is my plan. I am testing it on this elevator tip.
I want the edge between the fiberglass tip and the aluiminum structure to be smooth. I also do not like looking at blind rivets. I had extra epoxy mixed up from the other fiberglass tasks so I mixed in flox to create a almost peanut butter consistency. Spreading that along the edge gave me a smooth transition without extending it out over the aluminum significantly. This is maybe 1/4" or less on the aluminum. Just enough for a smooth transition and to fill the blind rivets.
I need to let it cure overnight. I think this will be nice transition without using a filler and maintain the look of a metal airplane.
I still had a little of the flox mixture left so I filled some of the pin holes in the rudder tip.
