Brief Description:  Sub-panel rivets

There are six rivets on each side of the sub-panel. They are located below the longeron and attach the subpanel to the F-902 bulkhead that runs up the side of the aircraft. I have read some interesting entries on various web sites concerning these rivets. It is actually worse than they wrote.

As you can see there are six (well only five and a bolt, but I will get back to that) rivets in image one. Two vertical rows of three rivets. The inside three can easily reached by the rivet set, but the access with the bucking bar is hampered by the F-902 bulkhead. The outside three have clear access for a bucking bar, but even with my curved rivet sets I can not get a clean, straight shot with the rivet gun.

Over the course of four hours I managed to get five set on each side. I only had to drill out five rivets (three on one side and two on the other.) You can see the AN3 bolt in the upper right corner. The original rivet was drilled out, the cherry max rivet I set in there was also drilled out and I ended up with an oversized hole. I could have gone to a 3/16th (AN5-4) rivet but I had little confidence in setting it. I put an AN3-3A bolt, washer and nut instead. I still have the same rivet on the other side to set. I am going to ponder my options for a day or two.
