Brief Description:  Putting the wings on - 03

Next was mounting the left wing. The right wing was easy so this wing had to be difficult. My friend Chris Baker came over to help me move the wing around. We slide the wing in and it looked like this was going to be a repeat of yesterday. That is an easy fit. Nope. I could get drift pins in but not the bolts. We worked back and forth trying to move the wing slightly to get the hardware bolts to slide in, but we could not get the bolts in place. During the process we took the wing off and put it back on two more times. During this process we discovered that:

1. The bolts were not round. You would think all bolts are nice and round and the same diameter. Not so! We ended up grinding the bolts high spots down to somewhat round. At least close to the same diameter.

2. The F-605 doubler to the F-705 Center section bar was hiting the flange of the inboard wing rib. This was just enough pressure to prevent the wing spar from fitting into the center section properly. Just a slight twist was evident. We fixed that by using my dremel tool and removing maybe 1/64" of material from the F-605. It was enough to relief the pressure on the center section and allowing the bolts to finally fit.

After getting the bolts in place I checked the incidence on the left wing. It was the same as the right wing. Two locations at 0.0 and two at 0.1. I still need to check the sweep of the wings. I started by attaching four plumb bobs on the leading each of the wing. One at the outboard rib on each wings and one at the most inboard rib. Using a laser level, I marked a line on the hangar floor and viewed where the plumb bobs were in comparison to the straight line. One the right wing the plumb bobs were on the line. On the left wing the outboard plumb bob was on the same line, but the inboard was not. It was getting late so I am leaving it there for the night.
