Bought a nice clear, straight grained piece of White Fir 2 X 4 at Lowes. I will be using it instead of the White Pine called for in the plans.
According to: Forest Products Laboratory. 1999. Wood handbook—Wood as an engineering material. Gen. Tech. Rep. FPL–GTR–113. Madison, WI: U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service,
Compression Parallel to Grain White Pine 33,100 kPa White Fir 40,000 kPa
Compression Perpendicular to Grain White Pine 3,000 kPa White Fir 3,700 kPa
Shear Parallel to Grain White Pine 6,200 kPa White Fir 7,600 kPa
Shear Perpendicular to Grain White Pine 2,100 kPa White Fir 2,100 kPa
With this data I see no problem using White fir instead of White pine.
