Image 1 shows the latch in place, but also reveals the three rivet old rivet holes from the original lower role. I filled these holes with flush rivets going to nothing but the skin itself. This was not a problem for the two rivets on each end, but the one in the middle gave me concern because it actually obstructed the latch handle in the closed position.
Solution: I squashed this rivet is flat as I felt comfortable doing, then ground down the shop head with my Scotchbrite wheel until it had a much lower profile. Now the latch doesn't contact the rivet. One the aircraft is painted, these rivets will be barely noticable and, if they are, the appear in a straight line as if they're part of the assembly. I am not dissatisfied.
