Here you can see how the cowling sits on the aircraft. Though not shown clearly here. The aft end of this peice sits below the edge of the firewall, to provide a 2.5" gap through which hot engine compartment air will exit. Image 3 shows one of these stand-offs, riveted to the cowling on one side, and clecoed to an adel clamp on the other.
Image 2 shows the door closed, and the felt 'sandwich' around the edges that help minimize gaps around the door when closed. In operation, with the door closed, the carburator draws air through the the engine compartment through the 2" flange (shown previously), into the now closed airbox, and back up through the air filter and out to the carb.
