Brief Description:  avionics troubleshooting Part 2

Going through the settings, and reading the installation manuals more carefully, I came to understand some limitations to these devices. For one thing, typcally, one type of information protocol can only be transmitted through one RS232 serial channel. The most notable of these is the GPS400W's 'Aviation' data: it's all the good stuff like GPS position, altitude, speed, course, etc., and it can only be sent through only one user-selected channel. When I wired this system, I expected to be able to transmit Aviation data via 3 of the 4 channels. It took a trip to the Van's Airforce site to see others confirm that this is indeed a 'known' issue, and that you simply splice the serial signal to all the boxes you want to feed. They're not technically challenging; I just wish I had known about them. Fortunately, those same individuals at Van's Airforce provided very practical advice on how to maximize the utility of the splice, creating a RS232 'bus' where up to 4 devices could easily pick up the signal.

So I spent 3 hours wiring up that serial bus, making sure to combine all the shield grounds. You can see in image 1 the schematic of the bus, added to my avionics system. Image 2 shows the final bus, feeding both the GRT EFIS, and the ELT.
