Brief Description:  radio stack: Part 1

Been busy with my radio stack trays. I consider the panel fairly inaccessible when complete, and since one of the toughest parts of installing or repairing avionics is access to the wiring, I saw a critical need to be able to pull the radio trays out through the front of the panel. Image 1 shows the avionics 'cage' I fabricated with 0.032" angles I bent up in my trusty bending brake. The two trays (SL-30 on top and Trio Transponder on bottom) are integral to the rigidity and strength of the tray, and when bolted togther, the unit is rock-solid. The two attach flanges on either side are extra-wide to cover the gap needed to be able to remove the 'cage', and will be bolted to the original panel through vertical reinforcing stringers and nutplates installed behind the original panel (see part 2).

My final choice of equipment is starting to show here: The SL-30 is a common and solid choice among builders, since it is practically two COM radios in one. It also provides the classic NAV VOR, localizer, and ILS capability for IFR work. The Trig TT31 transponder was selected because it is already ADS-B in/out compliant (for 2020), and is proven to be compatible with the other principle instrument to be installed on the left: a Grand Rapids Technologies (GRT) Sport HX. At $2800, the trig is a great value in my view.

If you're reading this you're probably surprised that I'm not installing a garmin GTN650. Don't get me wrong; that unit would be my preferred choice, but at $10K, it's fully $7K more than a used SL-30. True, I won't be able to make use of all those GPS approaches out there, but my set up will still allow standard VOR navigation, and shoot VOR, localizer, and precision ILS approaches at my destinations. When (if?) those navaids truly disappear in the future, I can pull my trusty avionics cage and swap out the SL-30 for a GTN650 (or hopefully something more competitively priced) in the future. "What no on-board GPS?" you ask. Of course! The GRT Sport HX unit has a built-in WAAS GPS for navigati
