Brief Description:  Throttle control cable part 2

After chatting with staff at McFarlane, the short panel-to-firewall distance, combined with the close proximity of the carb to the firewall made it impossible for them to fabricate a custom control that would follow the initial control cable routing I initially laid out in the previous post. Here's why: McFarlane needs about 8" between the throttle linkage and a support bracket on the ENGINE . Apparently, they would prefer to see a secondary support bracket on the engine, not on the firewall. In this way, vibration of the throttle assembly components (rod end, swivel, telescoping tube) is isolated WITH the engine. Otherwise, the engine's movements all transmit through these components, and McFarlane claims leads to early wear and possible failure.

To accommodate those 8" minimum, I had to find a suitable attach location on the engine for a bracket. Fortunately, one of the oil case bolts was perfectly suited for this. Also fortunately, there was just enough distance for the cable assembly to gently bend back towards the firewall and connect to the panel. So this is the set-up that appears to work best for my aircraft-engine combination.

I had to carefully measure the distance from the firewall to the extended throttle arm, taking into account the requisite 8" distance to the bracket (painted white), and the necessary curvature to enter the firewall. Thankfully it seems to work nicely. I fabricated the steel bracket out of 4130 3/32" stock.

There is absolutely a difference in the construction of a McFarlane product and an ACS control (mixture control is an ACS product). The throttle and carb heat controls are both McFarlane, and extremely robust. They also cost twice as much as ACS controls, but in hindsight, it is money well-spent.
